INTRODUCTION TO MATH UPSR

The mathematics paper in the UPSR examination is divided into 2 papers :

(i) Mathematics Paper1 (Code no. 015/1)
(ii) Mathematics Paper 2 (Code no. 015/2)

These papers are carried out separately at different times.
Candidates are required to pass both papers in order to pass the Mathematics paper in the UPSR examination.

Mathematics Paper1 (Code no. 015/1)

Characteristics of Paper 1

1. This question paper consists of 40 questions, of which 10 are direct questions while 30 are problem-solving questions as well as Critical and Creative Thinking Skill (CCTS) questions.
2. Candidates are required to answer all questions.
3. There are 4 multiple choice options for each question.
4. Candidates are required to choose only ONE answer by blackening the correct space on the answer sheet.
5. Candidates are given 60 minutes (1 hour) to answer all the questions.
6. The marks allocated for this paper is 40 marks.
7. Candidates do not need to show their working solution for this paper.
All questions in this paper are in compliance with the requirements of the syllabuses and curriculum specifications.

Format of Questions for Paper 1

1. There are two type of questions in Paper 1.

(i) Direct question
- Normally there are 8 - 10 questions of this type.
- Using symbol and numerals only
- Quite easy

(ii) Problem Solving Questions
- Normally there are about 30 questons of this type
- Using words in long sentences
- To calculate, pupils have to create "number sentence" from the question
- More than two operations
2. Candidates are`advised to follow steps to answer the problem solving questions:

(i) Understand the requirement of question
(ii) Decide the operations
(iii) carry out the operations
(iv) Blacken answer on the objective answer sheet provided

Mathematics Paper 2 (Code no. 015/2)

Characteristics of Paper 2

1. Paper 2 consists of 20 subjective questions.
2. Candidates are required to answer all questions.
3. Candidates must write their answer clearly in the spaces provided in the question paper.
4. Candidates must show all the working solution. It might help you get marks.
5. The marks allocated for each question is shown in the brackets.
6. There are 3 types of questions.
(i) 1 marks - 5 questions.
(ii) 2 marks - 10 questions.
(iii) 3 marks - 5 questions.
7. The duration for answering this paper is 40 minutes.
8. The marks allocated for this papaer is 40 marks.

Format of Questions for Paper 2

1. There are three types of questions in Paper 2. They are:

(i) 1 mark questions
- Normally 5 questions
- Direct questions
- Using symbols and numerals only
- Quite easy
- Just write out the correct answer
(ii) 2 marks questions
- Normally 10 questions
- Direct questions and problem solving
- Using symbol, numeral and word
- Need to show calculation
- Involving unit conversion
- More than two operations
(iii) 3 marks questions
- Normally 5 questions
- Problem solving
- Using symbols, numerals and words
- Need to show calculation
- Give the correct answer
- Usually involves diagrams, table and figures
- Involves unit conversion
- More than two operations
